Farmers in western Uganda keep livestock as a source of food and income. As such they play a vital role in the livelihoods of many people in Africa. The type of animals kept are cows, goats, pigs, chickens and sheep. Most farmers tend to have a small number of each animal rather than a large number of the same. There is a high demand for meat, milk and eggs produced by livestock and so farmers have an opportunity to not only feed themselves but also earn money at the local markets.
Agri Evolve is working with livestock farmers to improve the quality of animals. This is achieved by using selective breeding techniques including artificial insemination. Training and education of farmers in modern breeding methods is an important part of our work.
To get the best production from livestock requires good knowledge and skills. We are working with farmers to improve their animal husbandry skills. Simple measures including supplying water, good quality feed and a high welfare environment significantly improve levels of production.
Establishing good standards of production enables customers to have confidence in the quality of produce. We help farmers to develop cooperatives so that the best possible price is achieved through increased selling power.
